MARKET INFORMATION
A nano view of one of solar's big problems
Moths' eyes are inspiring a new approach to the development of anti-reflective coatings. Using semiconductor nanorods, researchers in the Netherlands say they have developed an anti-reflective coating that could increase the efficiency of photovoltaic cells by capturing more of the light from the entire solar spectrum and at many different angles. Coatings COMET, February 2009.
Dye-ing for more power
One promising approach to solar energy is the so-called dye sensitized solar cell, which has several advantages over traditional silicon cells. Coatings COMET, February 2009.

Paint Research Association team up with Master Painters Institute
The Paint Research Association and the Master Painters Institute have teamed up to establish a performance-based 'qualified products list' for architectural paints and coatings in Europe and the Middle East.
MPI is an Institute dedicated to the establishment of quality standards and quality assurance in the painting and coating application industries in the USA and Canada. MPI evolved from a non-profit association established in 1899 and is now headquartered in Vancouver, Canada. Further information is available from their website at www.mpi.net
MPI performance-based paint and painting specifications are now used by the US Military throughout the world; by the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) to replace the previous US Federal Paint Specifications; by the AIA MasterSpec, referenced by approximately half of US architects; by NASA for facilities; by US Veterans Administration hospitals; by the Canadian Government's National Master Specification; and thousands of other North American designers, and facility managers.
The PRA often receives requests for independent testing and approval of paints, which it carries out to a variety of national and international standards. However the pursuit of sustainable building design and construction in Europe now requires more emphasis on performance specifications rather than generic description of materials. The MPI scheme provides an established and well proven mechanism for doing this and PRA is now ready to carry out performance testing and administer the approval scheme in Europe and the Middle East.
- Specifiers benefit by being able to determine use of systems that are fit for purpose, knowing that potential suppliers have had the quality of their products independently verified.
- Suppliers benefit from knowing that they compete on the basis of formulation efficiency and performance to a minimum required quality level, rather than with cut price, lower quality offers that usually result in lower standards of construction and finish or higher cost processes.
- Contractors benefit from tighter control of processes and margins hence reduced risk of problems and remedial work.

Irfab Multi-client Study: Specialist and Functional Architectural Coatings Market 2008-2018
The "Specialist and Functional Architectural Coatings Market" study will be the first of its kind on the European and Middle Eastern Markets providing a unique source of data and insights on this fragmented sector. It is intended to concentrate on the architectural coatings which have functional properties.
The study will bring you the benefit of this vital information base when formulating your global strategies - from technology to marketing. It will enable you to identify both the threats from competing technologies and future opportunities. Thus, the report will represent a reference guide for your long term strategic planning and provides a basis for more detailed segmental analysis.
The scope of the study will include Industrial, Commercial, Institutional, Residential, and Recreational Buildings. Systems with additional functional purposes to the expected aesthetic and protective properties of coatings will be described in the study.
Whilst an overview will be given on the global market for architectural and decorative coatings, analysis of standard interior paints, and the Do It Yourself 'DIY' market will not be included.
