Enhancing the In-Can Microbial Resistance of Aqueous Paints

Currently two waterborne paint issues with potentially far-reaching microbiological implications are of concern to the European coatings industry. These issues refer to product compliancy in respect of lowering VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) levels, and the practical effectiveness of in-can preservatives for latex paints at acceptable EC use levels.

Inherent in raw materials for aqueous paints is the potential to contribute to in-can microbial resistance of the final paint product. This potential will be quantified, used to investigate enhancement of the microbial resistance of (unpreserved) latex paints, and to provide vehicles for optimisation of in-can microbicides.
