Self-Stratifying Adhesives

The footwear industry has long sought a solution to the problem of having to apply multiple coatings to uppers and soles in order to adhesively bond them together.

Self-stratifying polymer technology was developed by PRA in a previous project (‘Self-stratifying Coatings'). Surfaces that previously needed two or more different coatings could be successfully treated with only one application. This single coating separates into discrete layers performing different functions, for example, primer and outer protective coat.

The Self-Stratifying Adhesives project, as part of the UK Government's Carrier Technology Programme, studied the application of self-stratification coating technology to adhesive sole bonding in the footwear industry through the use of surface energies and theoretical calculation of work of adhesion.
