Air pollution monitoring work carried out by PRA is normally
on a consulting basis for clients and the results are strictly
confidential. During such work it became apparent that many of
the findings would be of general interest.
This project was designed to carry out individual monitoring
exercises in such a way that the findings were not restricted to
any particular company but could be made available to the
industry as a whole.
The work involved monitoring pollutants in the working
atmosphere at 19 factories selected to give a wide coverage of
industries. Eighteen of the factories were paint users and one
was a paint manufacturer.
A total of 834 different gaseous and particulate pollutants
were determined and each concentration was compared with the
appropriate Occupational Exposure Standard (OES). This data,
together with details of the working methods and conditions, was
then evaluated in order to correlate these conditions with the
levels of pollution produced.
This report is intended as a guide to those concerned with
limiting air pollution in areas where paint is applied. It can be
used to predict the effect of changes in working methods or the
use of different surface coatings and it gives an indication of
current air pollution levels experienced by a variety of
industries.
The final phase of the evaluation is described in TR/1/89.
